"Kizza"
Kieran is a Batsman/Bowler, who has played for centrals
since 2002/2003. He has also played indoor cricket in Melton for
both the Eagles and Colts.
His greatest thrill in cricket was to retire in a one day
match. The biggest disappointment, of course, was to join Centrals
"Duck Club" (everyone becomes a member sooner or later).
When he grows up, Kieran wants to be either a cricketer
following in the footsteps of his favourite player Ricky Ponting, or a
guitarist which is what he does when not playing cricket, going to school,
or eating chips and drinking slurpees.
Kieran says that the biggest influence on his cricket has
been his dad, Andrew. |

Highlights
I think I had the record for most catches at the club which I aim to
regain. And the worst bowling average in the history of Melton
Centrals Cricket Club which is approximately 200.
Also being labeled by a past captain of the club in his exact words
“Have a look at Brad…. He can’t bat! He can’t Bowl! But he’s an
alright cricketer!”. This occurred after a wicket occurred
during an “A” Grade game a few seasons ago.

"Govey"
Coodabeen Champion No Govey is
not a "could have been" because of his unique taste in festive
headwear (living the club policy of slip slop slap...even if it is
inside after dark).
Govey gets the nod this time
for his "Steve Waugh batting" performance in "C" Grade against Melton
South on 13 December 2003. Govey
was out "hit wicket" after stepping way across and then way back then
taking an almighty swing at the ball only to find all three stumps
between bat and ball.
Not content,
Govey redefined the fielding requirement of "walking and talking" when
he was a bit slow getting to a catching opportunity. His team
mates now say "come on Govey waking,
walking and talking"
For the record, Govey did take the "catch of the
century" later in the same match. |

Congs : 24-31 January 2004
This was always going to be a special game
irrespective of the result because it was the latest in a long line of father
and son debuts for Melton Centrals. Brett and Braydon Hickey were playing
in the same team together for the first time. In addition, the Club
selected two U/14 players (Michael Manning and Adam Toll) for their first senior
game (to play along side their junior coach Rob Ward) .
...but then...
The Hickeys made an interesting "family
double" of:-
 |
5/59 (Brett 2/23..Braydon 3/36)
|
 |
50 runs (Brett 43 @ S/R 154..Braydon
7)
|
The Partnerships:-
 |
119 Rod Richardson / Mick Rowan
for the second wicket
|
 |
113 Andrew Hayes / Brett Hickey
for the fifth wicket
|
 |
108 Andrew Hayes / Chris Hulett
for the sixth wicket
|
The Strike Rates:-
 |
154 Brett Hickey (43 Runs off 28

|
 |
145 Andrew Hayes (138 Runs off 95

|
 |
90 Chris Hulett (66 Runs of 73

|
 |
70 Mick Rowan (67 Runs off 96 Balls)

"Fat Mac"
Scott MacFarlane joined the club in
1997/1998 when his son Brad ("Beef") began in the Under 12's. He
took the opportunity to start playing when we joined the Senior WSUCCA
competition and hasn't looked back since.
Scott is the Club's all time leading
wicket taker, claiming his 100th victim in the 2001/2002 season.
In 2002/2003 Scott
played in our "C"
Grade Premiership -v- Melton South, and added considerably to his
wicket tally. 9/50 "C" Grade -v- Melton South being a season and
career best.
"Matthew Hayes has a lot to answer
for" said Scott after taking the "9 for" [Matty took the 10th and
final wicket].
A minor career low-light for Scott
was the 2003 Jabba Shield game where he was hit on the nose by a Josh
Orr ball. "Is that what a helmet is for" he said after..."best I
get one". It wasn't all bad news though....no major
damage....and "at least it wasn't Beef that got me. I couldn't
stand the ribbing if it was".
Although enjoying much success in
cricket already, Scott reckons there is much more to be done. "I'd
like to bowl all 72 overs in a match". "The only thing stopping me are
the laws of cricket which require a change of bowler at the change of
ends" "I'll work on that".
Scott joined Centrals committee in
2002, and is currently assigned the responsibility of keeping our
grounds playable. It's a big job, but Scott excels at it.
He is always doing something around the grounds, or the rooms, or at
MSC [usually to avoid training], but it's all to the benefit of the
Club. |

Webmasters note.
Matt, being Matt, does not like having his photo taken (let alone splashed
over the internet), so we've respected his desire for privacy by not
publishing one of the very few existing photos that we have of him.
The batsman shown here is, of course, the late Sir Donald Bradman.

107 -v- Wyndham : 24 January
2004
Those
lucky enough to be at our Northcott Street home ground on Saturday 24 January
2004 were treated to an exhibition of the essence of what Melton Centrals
Cricket Club is all about.
With
its beginnings set back in junior cricket, the cream was on show this day.
Games record holder, club stalwart, and genuine quiet achiever Matthew Simpson
put on a display of controlled power and cricket savvy to score his maiden
century and to steer "B" Grade to a total of 359.
Coming
in with the score at a modest 6/137, Matty proceeded to orchestrate a 147 run
partnership with Greg Dumbrell by firstly drawing in the fielders with perfect
placement and quick singles, the hitting over the top when the field closed in.
Matt
innings of 107 included 15 fours, and and came to an end when the team was on
351. Matt had been in the centre whilst he and his team mates put on 214
runs.
Those
who know Matty recognise that he is a club and team man first and last. He
readily recognises that without batting partners he would still be on 0 not out.
For those of who had the privilege of seeing this innings on this day know that
no one deserves accolades more than Matty without whose experience, commitment
and unselfishness the team would not be in the position that it now finds
itself.
Thanks to "B" Grade Captain John
White for this report

Trivia
I was partnering
Matthew Hayes when he hit his first 50 in under 12's and his first 100
in Seniors.
The nickname that never caught on.....
I was referred to as
"The Terminator" by Allan Welfare in under 12's because of my
knack of being able to break long partnerships, and get the "star"
batsmen out. It was first used in a match against Centrals Red.
As I was brought on to bowl, Allan said "watch out we're bringing on
the Terminator". During my first over an opposition spectator
referred to my bowling as "S###". I finished with 3/8
that day !!! |

Past Players
|
|
|
Anthony Aloi

 |
"Wheels"
First Centrals Senior
Captain.
From a Port Melbourne Football Club Supporter Site:-
Anthony Aloi was
originally from Melton where he then made the Western Jets
under 18 squad. He was a stand out player at under 18 level and in 1997 was named
best
and fairest at the Jets which also included players such as: Lance Picione,
Heath Scotland and Chris Obst.
This lead to Anthony "Wheels" Aloi being
taken in the national draft at selection 63 to the Western bulldogs. The next 2 seasons unfortunately for Wheels he did not produce his best
football and battled form and injuries before being delisted at the end of
2000. A highlight being kicking 3 goals against Melbourne in a senior
practice game. Aloi did not play a senior game.
After a short stint at Coburg, Wheels lined up for the Borough in 2001 and
has been a star performer since. Aloi has played 57 senior games for Port
usually roaming around half forward.
Anthony is 186cm and has superb skills on both sides of the body and is a
deadly shot for goal whether from a set shot or in general play.
He has battled injury over the years and has had 3 shoulder operations
which
is why you will usually see him with taped arms and shoulders.
Anyone who has seen Anthony play knows what a skilled player he is and if
you leave him unattended for a few moments, he only needs a few
possessions
to really hurt the opposition.
Wheels is a favourite among the Port supporters, so keep an eye out for
number 6 wearing the red and blue! |
